NM drought will not hinder summer activities

Despite the dry conditions, New Mexico residents are encouraged to participate in outdoor activities. Last week a joint press conference was held to remind New Mexicans state parks and recreation facilities are opened throughout the state.

New Mexico is experiencing a drought with precipitation lower than normal. State Engineer Scott Verhines said La Niña is to blame for the dry winter months, but weather patterns should change during the summer.

Albuquerque downpour toppled trees, destroyed dugouts and caused power outages

Strong winds, rain and hail downed power lines, destroyed Little League dugouts and toppled trees throughout Albuquerque on Friday.

In total, more than 5,600 customers reported power outages in the metro area.

At 11 p.m. Friday night, PNM's power outage map showed more than 900 customers in the Northeast Heights near Juan Tabo and Menaul Boulevard are without power.

More than 2,000 people in the South Valley had their power restored around 8:30 p.m.

PNM officials said power was restored for more than 2,600 North Valley and Old Town residents by 8 p.m.

Various small outages were also reported in Rio Rancho and the East Mountains.

PNM officials expect power to be restored to all sometime Friday night.

There have also been reports of trees uprooting and falling to the ground.

The dugouts at the North Valley Little League fields were destroyed by what some witnesses called, "a small tornado."

Commercial zoning could force mobile home owners out

The Coronado Village Mobile Home Park at I-25 and Paseo will be included into a commercial overlay zone, meaning the property could be developed for a big box retail store.

The Albuquerque City Council approved the measure late Monday night on a 5-4 vote.

Residents have complained they would be forced from their homes if the area is commercially developed.

This battle goes back to 2010 when the City Council excluded the property from the overlay zone after residents complained about having to relocate.

District Court ruled that the area was improperly excluded and sent the issue back to the City Council for reconsideration.

Mobile home park residents say they are being told by mobile home park officials that there are no big commercial development plans at this time.

Some City Councilors tell KOB 4 they also haven't heard of any major development plans by the owners of the park.
